Infamous 1990 Captain America To Get ‘Director’s Cut’ Blu-Ray

The pantheon of laughingly terrible low-budget superhero-comic adaptations is comprised of far too many works to name. The Roger Corman-produced 1994 film The Fantastic Four comes immediately to mind, of course. So do the Legends of the Superheroes TV specials from 1979 and the failed Justice League of America pilot from 1997. And so on …

But standing among them is the 1990 Captain America film from B-movie director Albert Pyun (Cyborg, Kickboxer 2: The Road Back), which starred Matt Salinger (Revenge of the Nerds) as the Sentinel of Liberty and Scott Paulin as the Red Skull. There were a few “names” involved, too, like Ned Beatty, Darren McGavin and Bill Mumy. Not marquee names, but still …

Planned for a 1989 theatrical release by 21st Century Film Corporation — the company also held the movie rights to Spider-Man at one point — the production was crippled a few days into shooting when much of the financial backing was withdrawn, leaving Pyun to complete Captain America on a much, much smaller scale. The result wasn’t the grand feature film envisioned as a celebration of the character’s 50th anniversary, but rather a B-movie that sat on a shelf for almost three years before making its way to video and cable television.

But now, with Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger hurling toward theaters, Pyun is back with a director’s cut that, he tells io9.com, will be based on “my own 35 mm CA work picture and temp mix [that] I did before I left [the] picture.” His cut will be longer than the original release — 124 minutes versus 97 minutes — and will feature “a few added scenes, and is more character-oriented and less ‘super hero action.’”

The director’s cut will be released on Blu-ray in May — to hold you over until the July 22 premiere of the Marvel film? — and will screened at the Fantasia Festival this summer in Montreal and at the B Movie Celebration in September in Franklin, Indiana.
